You’re right that I don’t know exactly where stories on my feed come from, but at the same time, I see them, and I definitely understand why they’d be on my feed.

The kind of comments I’m seeing where people are shouting up at the gods on Mount Medium that their feed sucks — I just don’t understand them, really. I see my feed stories, I look at the list next to it of tags I follow, I see who recommended the stories. It makes sense. Do I know exactly how the sausage is made — so to speak? No. But I know on an abstract level that a pig is slaughtered, there is “processing”, and that I purchased the sausage and helped drive demand for it.

I hope I didn’t stretch that analogy too far…
