I never thought I would endorse something written by Glenn Beck — since I am as far left as they come. But here I am doing that very thing. I appreciate the spirit of this piece, and it really moved me. Thank you for writing it.

The one thing I would caution about the blanket statement that words cannot hurt us is this: there is a difference between words spoken by those with power, and those spoken by everyone else. Those who have power and privilege — whether it be earned honestly or otherwise — have a duty to be careful about how their words move others to act. Mere words with no provocation to violence can serve to create an oppressive environment for others. So words must be chosen wisely by those with power.

I am not advocating for censorship or watering down. I am merely saying that the same truth can be spoken in many ways. With power comes the responsibility to choose that way carefully.
