I am sure that to you, and perhaps those who practice in your particular sangha, there is both a clear idea of the immediate aims of meditation and a precise definition of enlightenment. But I’ve read enough Buddhist writing (suttas and otherwise) to know that there’s quite a variety of ideas of how one should approach the goals of meditation and what enlightenment actually means. It’s probably beneficial that you have a clear idea of both concepts, but it simply isn’t the case for most people — whether practicing Buddhists or not.
