I block the time I covet by booking myself during those times.

Ditto. I have even gone so far as making a “self meeting”, where I put an objective in the calendar event, as well as an agenda. I use the “meeting” to tackle a project or bundle of tasks — things I may keep putting off if left to the usual routine. It really works.
